Country page - new presentations of the MALARIA section

The malaria section has been adapted according to the new CDC recommendations for alternative drugs for prophylaxis.The elements of this section appear in new order and a new document is accessible from this section to facilitate drug choice. Included are:

  1. Details on the risk areas
  2. Transmission months, Predominant species, Chloroquine resistant and Mosquito protection
  3. Recommended Chemoprophylaxis and Presumptive Self-Treatment for travelers who elect NOT to take or are unable to take appropriate chemoprophylaxis
  4. New document " Drug Choice Considerations", giving the Pros and Cons About Drugs for Chemoprophylaxis and Presumptive Self-treatment.
Recommended drugs for the Chemoprophylaxis of Malaria
The drugs for chemoprophylaxis are now listed as alternatives. Drugs are listed alphabetically (as CDC lists them) and not in order of preference.The document " Drug Choice Considerations" gives the information for choosing the appropriate drug. For example:
  • Areas with chloroquine-sensitive malaria: chloroquine (Aralen)
  • Areas with chloroquine-resistant malaria: atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone), doxycycline or mefloquine (Lariam)
  • Areas with mefloquine-resistant malaria: atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone) or doxycycline

Recommended drug for the Presumptive Self-treatment
Complete revision of risks, immunization recommendations and comments in all countries for:

  • For travelers who elect NOT to take or are unable to take appropriate chemoprophylaxis: atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone)
